Dr. Kenneth Anderson of Anderson Center for Hair joined Steve Barnes and Leslie Fram on The Morning X (99X Atlanta) to discuss one of the most talked-about celebrity hair transformations of the year: John Cena’s hair transplant.
Inside John Cena’s Hair Restoration Journey
Dr. Anderson, the internationally recognized specialist responsible for Cena’s famous procedure, spoke to radio hosts about what made the WWE superstar and Hollywood actor’s transformation so successful. The key? A comprehensive approach that began long before the actual treatment.
“Initially, as [Cena] mentioned, we did some scalp therapy – non-surgical treatments to stabilize his hair loss, maybe try to grow a little bit back. After about 10 months, we went forward with a hair transplant surgery and, of course, I used the FUE technique,” Dr. Anderson said during the segment that aired on September 26. This 10-month pre-surgical phase is crucial for getting the best possible results, ensuring the scalp is in prime condition for a full hair transplant.
The Modern FUE Hair Transplant Technique: Scar-Free and Natural
In the interview with Fram and Barnes, Dr. Anderson explained the follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant technique used for Cena’s procedure. This method was pioneered by Dr. Anderson himself in 2004.
“It’s a very elegant procedure,” Dr. Anderson said. “We essentially move hair from the permanent areas on the back and sides and implant that, typically, into areas of need so that it looks like it’s always been there, not like a doctor has done any work.”
This is different from other hair transplant techniques that leave visible linear scars. Instead, FUE extracts individual hair follicles, leaving no detectable marks – even when patients choose to sport short haircuts.
But technical excellence is only part of the process. An aesthetic eye is also necessary for truly successful hair restorations.
“The overarching principle that I apply is that it has to look natural,” Dr. Anderson said.
He elaborated further with an example. “So when I perform a hair transplant on someone who has a horseshoe around the back and sides, we don’t create a flat, low hair line as if there’s not been any hair loss,” Dr. Anderson said. “I recreate a look of a bit of loss. Especially in the corners, we’ll have some recession there so that it kind of matches up with the overall aesthetic.”
Which Stars Are Hiding Hair Transplants?
In one of the interview’s most entertaining segments, Dr. Anderson offered his personal opinion on which major celebrities have likely undergone their own hair restoration procedures. While he can’t say for sure, the doctor’s expert eye can spot the signs of quality hair restoration work.
