About the Catrina: A person dressed up as a skeleton at a Mexican celebration is typically referred to as a “Catrín” (for men) or “Catrina” (for women). This character is a popular symbol during Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations. The Catrina, also known as “La Calavera Catrina,” was originally a satirical image created by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada and later popularized by artist Diego Rivera. The Catrina has become an iconic representation of the Day of the Dead, embodying the Mexican tradition of laughing at death and honoring those who have passed away. The elegant skeleton figure is often adorned with colorful clothing, elaborate hats, and face paint, reflecting the celebration’s vibrant and festive nature.
