DR. KEN ANDERSON’S JOURNEY IN HAIR RESTORATION SURGERY

Dr. Ken Anderson, MD, FISHRS, uniquely stands as the only board-certified facial plastic surgeon in the world with more than 20 years dedicated exclusively to the specialty of hair restoration surgery. Following the completion of his fellowship in facial plastic surgery at the University of Michigan, he began his career in Beverly Hills, California, in 2003, where he began to perform FUE (Follicular Unit Excision) hair transplant surgery. Because the FUE hair restoration surgery method surged in popularity around the year 2012, most every center offering FUE hair transplant surgery has less than five years experience with the FUE technique, with a tiny fraction of centers having five to 10 years of experience. Dr. Anderson is one of a small handful of doctors in the world to have more than 20 years of experience performing FUE hair transplant surgery.

The reality of hair restoration “surgeon” credentials

In the field of hair restoration surgery, it’s crucial to recognize that any licensed physician, regardless of their primary specialty, can claim the title of a “surgeon” and offer hair restoration procedures. Surprisingly, many professionals who perform these surgeries in the United States lack formal training in any surgical specialty, having backgrounds in fields such as dermatology, family medicine, and physical medicine and rehabilitation. The only requirement of the physician is to hold a medical license, which in most states requires just one year of internship following medical school, and no board certificate of any sort is earned.

Dr. Anderson, however, sets a gold standard in this arena. After completing his undergraduate studies at Penn State University and acquiring a medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh, he embarked on an intensive six-year surgical residency at the highly acclaimed University of Michigan’s Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery program. Not stopping there, Dr. Anderson pursued his passion for plastic surgery by securing a coveted spot in one of the 30 nationwide fellowships in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, also at the University of Michigan, learning under the world-renowned facial plastic surgeon Dr. Shan Baker.

Triple board-certification and global recognition

These efforts earned him a board certificate in the specialties of both Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery as well as Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He also earned a board certificate issued by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. Dr. Anderson is one of less than 10 surgeons worldwide who is triple board-certified by these esteemed boards, and the only facial plastic surgeon in the world to have dedicated his 20-plus year career to the specialty of hair restoration surgery.

Dr. Anderson is a Fellow of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, a title given to surgeons who have achieved the highest possible involvement and accomplishment in the specialty. Similarly, he is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. Since 2010, he has been a member of the exclusive International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons, the only hair restoration society ever to be recognized by Consumer Reports, Consumers Digest and WebMD for its commitment to hair transplant patient education and safety. Only 52 physicians worldwide are members of this preeminent society of surgeons, of only which 32 practice in the United States.

The Anderson Center for Hair, with Dr. Anderson at its forefront, has been consistently recognized among the top 25 global hair restoration practitioners by a notable UK consumer group. Among these distinguished surgeons, only 12 operate in the US, further underscoring the Center’s exceptional status.

Charting new frontiers in hair restoration: Dr. Anderson’s global journey

In 2008, Dr. Anderson was recruited from Beverly Hills to Atlanta by the Department of Facial Plastic Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine to create an academic hair restoration surgery program for Emory. Over the past two decades, Dr. Anderson has emerged as a luminary of hair restoration techniques, imparting his wisdom through more than 35 scholarly presentations worldwide. His expertise in follicular-unit extraction (FUE) and follicular-unit transplantation (FUT) has enlightened physicians and surgeons across the globe, shaping the contours of the field.

Dr. Anderson’s impact extends into the academic halls of prestigious university hospitals. Through his insightful Grand Rounds presentations, he has shared his extensive expertise with the faculty, staff, resident physicians, and students of the Departments of Facial Plastic Surgery and Dermatology at several university hospitals around the world, including the University of Michigan School of Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine, Mercer University School of Medicine, Medical College of Georgia, and Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospital in Tokyo, Japan.

The educator’s journey: Dr. Anderson’s passion for sharing knowledge

For Dr. Anderson, the art of teaching has always been as invigorating as the practice of medicine. This passion took root during his residency at the University of Michigan, where he found great joy in guiding nurses and medical students through the complexities of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

His fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery further deepened his educational endeavors, providing a platform for Dr. Anderson to mentor ENT residents. He navigated them through an array of plastic surgical procedures, enriching their understanding of the head and neck’s intricate anatomy.

Today, Dr. Anderson continues to shape minds as an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Emory University School of Medicine. The Anderson Center for Hair, under his stewardship, transforms into an educational hub each month. A chosen dermatologist from Emory, whether in-training or an established faculty physician, is welcomed into a day-long immersive experience. Within the center’s operating theatres and consultation offices, alongside Drs. Anderson, Lee, and Wetzel, these visitors delve into the complexities of hair loss and discover diverse treatment strategies.

Dr. Anderson’s dedication to education reflects a core belief: knowledge is not just to be acquired, but to be shared and propagated. This philosophy is a cornerstone of the Anderson Center for Hair’s mission, weaving a rich tapestry of knowledge, skill, and innovation.
